Profile
Founded
in 1988, the Department of Pharmacy at the Second Affiliated Hospital of
Soochow University has been recognized as a key specialty department in Suzhou. The department has a total of 113 pharmacy professionals,
including 28 senior pharmacists (Associate Chief Pharmacists and above), 67
pharmacists-in-charge, and 18 pharmacists. The department of pharmacy
comprises three sub-specialties: clinical pharmacy, the pharmacy
dispensing/pharmacy intravenous admixture services (PIVAS), and the drug
clinical trial institution. The clinical pharmacy division is designated as
both a National Clinical Pharmacist Training Base and a National Rational Drug
Use Demonstration Base. The pharmacy dispensing department/PIVAS has achieved
the automation, informatization, and intelligent management of medication
dispensing and the entire process of drug management. The Phase I clinical
trial unit conducts early-stage clinical research, including single-dose,
multiple-dose, food effect, and drug interaction studies, as well as
bioequivalence studies, generic drug evaluations, pharmacokinetic studies in
special populations, and human mass balance and biotransformation studies for 14C-labeled
innovative drugs. The precision pharmacy research center focuses on therapeutic
drug monitoring and model-guided clinical research, providing a strong platform
for personalized drug therapy and clinical drug research.
Clinical
Pharmacy Services
The
department comprises 13 full-time, standardized-trained pharmacists serving 15
specialties, including 5 with teaching certifications. This team provides
services in medication consultation, review, prescription evaluation,
patient education, and pharmaceutical care for complex and critical cases.
Specialized pharmacy clinics are also operated to perform medication
reconciliation for chronic patients on multiple medications. Real-time audits
of hospital-wide prescriptions and orders are conducted through pre-review
software to ensure accuracy and appropriateness. Over the past three years,
clinical pharmacists have participated in 388 multidisciplinary consultations,

with fully automated pill dispensing machines, a single-dose packaging system,
intelligent drug storage units, an automatic infusion sorting machine, and a
PIVAS intelligent labeling machine. The department has implemented a
comprehensive set of systems, including a pharmacy information system, rational
drug use monitoring system, narcotic drug management system, peritoneal
dialysis solution distribution management system, prescription collection
system, and an inpatient pharmacy management system. These systems have enabled
the automation, informatization, and intelligence of drug dispensing, drug
management, and rational drug use oversight. The outpatient department
processes an average of 1,931,004 prescriptions annually, with a total drug
consumption of 827,584,158 yuan. It handles an average of 1,220,829 intravenous

The standardized drug clinical trial center has registered 18 pharmaceutical specialties and 22 equipment specialties, conducting over 600 clinical trials to date, including more than 150 international multicenter and imported registration trials, over 100 clinical trials for medical devices and in vitro diagnostic reagents, and over 150 registered products. The Phase I clinical trial unit has 62 research-oriented beds, including 33 general beds, 9 intensive care beds, 2 emergency beds, 12 isotope beds, and 6 for glucose clamp studies. It has successfully conducted over 160 trials, encompassing FIH, BE studies, and consistency evaluations. The center enables advanced research on human substance balance and biotransformation of 14C-labeled innovative drugs.
